How to adhere to gentle washing techniques

Techniques

We've come up with a guide on how to use mild shampoo or cleansing conditioner to wash your hair.

It's worth remembering that washing techniques with mild shampoo or cleansing conditioner were created to promote less aggressive cleansing of the hair and roots, thus preserving the scalp's natural and beneficial oils.

Although the techniques have become more popular among curly and coily people, they are recommended for all hair types as they offer many advantages. Check out some of them:

  • the lighter sulphates manage to cleanse the impurities of everyday life without stripping the hair and scalp of their natural oils, preventing dryness and frizz;
  • help to make wavy, curly and frizzy hair more defined;
  • prevent the cuticles from opening and thus promote healthy and strong hair;
  • you'll notice that you need to wash your hair less (even in the case of oily hair). This is because shampoo with less sulphate prevents the rebound effect (i.e. the more oil the product removes from the hair, the more the scalp has to produce to replace the amount lost);
  • your hair will be healthier, shinier and stronger.

Gentle shampoo (LESS POO)

This type of shampoo is formulated with a lower concentration of sulphate in its formula, so it promotes gentler cleansing.

Therefore, it's common for questions to arise such as: "But if it promotes a gentler cleansing, will it remove the finishing products (such as styling cream, leave-in, gel, jelly, spray, etc)?"

This will depend on whether the finishing products you use are free of petrolatums and water-insoluble silicones, so when you adopt this technique it's essential to swap ALL your products for those known as "released" and, if necessary, have an anti-residue shampoo on hand - we'll explain why below.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use this type of wash without any secrets:

1ST WASH

The first wash should be with an anti-residue shampoo to remove all impurities from products containing petrolatums and water-insoluble silicones. Finish by washing with an approved conditioner, and finish with an approved leave-in or styling cream.

2ND WASH

In the second wash, all products must be released for the technique, so make sure they are suitable.

  1. Apply a small amount of the "shampoo with less sulphate" to damp hair and scalp, and massage all over the head with your fingertips (without your nails, which can hurt);
  2. After rinsing, apply the conditioner to the lengths to the ends (without roots), wait up to 3 minutes and rinse;

*Thisstep is essential for closing the cuticles on all types of hair, including straight hair.

  1. Finally, remove excess water with a towel, apply a finishing product of your choice and dry naturally or with a hairdryer.

Cleansing Conditioner (COWASH)

This type of product, despite its name, was developed to wash hair. Surprising, isn't it?

We're so used to hearing this name always associated with the conditioning step at the end of the wash that it sounds very strange to us that there's a product with this name that can wash the hair.

So what's the difference between it and an ordinary conditioner?

The difference with Cleansing Conditioner (or CoWash as it is more commonly known) is that its formula contains a substance that replaces sulphate, which is much gentler, removes impurities and conditions hair and roots at the same time.

People who opt for cleansing conditioners often ask themselves: "But is it right to use two conditioners, one cleansing and one ordinary?". Well, the answer is YES and we'll explain why below.

*Although you only use it once, at the start of the process, it's important to keep the anti-residue shampoo in case you need to start the process again - in an unexpected situation where you've used non-approved products (traveling, staying overnight at someone else's house, etc.).

2ND WASH

In the second wash, all products must be released for the technique, so make sure they are suitable.

  1. Apply a small amount of the "cleansing conditioner/CoWash" to the damp hair and scalp, and massage all over the head with your fingertips (without your nails, which could hurt);
  2. After rinsing, apply the conditioner to the lengths to the ends (without roots), wait up to 3 minutes and rinse;

*Thisstep is essential to close the hair cuticles, even if you have already used another conditioner to wash (CoWash), because they have different functions.

  1. Finally, remove excess water with a towel and apply a finishing product of your choice and dry naturally or with a hairdryer.
