Dyeing your hair at home

Coloring

There's no secret to coloring your hair at home without staining your skin or hair and still getting an even tone with good coverage, just a few simple tricks. Check them out.

If you're in the habit of coloring your hair at home, check out the tips we've put together and get an even more incredible result!

1. choose the right color

The first step is to buy the right kit for your needs. You know that color that comes stamped on the box? It usually doesn't match reality or what will be on your hair.

An important point here is that dye does not lighten hair. In other words, if you have black hair, it's unlikely that you'll be able to achieve a golden hue, for example, without using hydrogen peroxide (and this bleaching process is much more complicated, so it should be done in a salon).

If you're in doubt about the color you've chosen, apply a little product to just one strand before dyeing your entire head of hair.

2. Know the difference between coloring and toning

Another point you should pay attention to is whether the kit you choose is a dye kit or a toning kit. Although they look the same, they are quite different.

Toners generally don't last very long and usually wash out. They are recommended for people who want a light coverage, to test a new color before investing in a dye job or to give their hair a shine bath to revive the color.

Dye, on the other hand, has a longer fixation and is also more suitable for those who want to cover gray hair. The dye is permanent and won't wash out (it will just fade).

3. Do the sensitivity test

Many people skip this step, thinking it's not important. But know that allergies can happen with any product - and it's not because you've never had an allergy to a certain dye that you can't develop one.

So ALWAYS do a sensitivity test before coloring your hair at home. Also called a touch test, it should be done about 48 hours before coloring your hair.

Simply dab a little of the coloring cream behind your ear with a cotton swab. Leave to dry and repeat the process twice more. Don't wash or touch the area and observe the skin's reaction over the next few hours. If the area doesn't redden, itch or blister, you can apply the dye without fear of allergies.

4. Skin care to avoid blemishes

There's nothing worse than getting ink stains on your forehead or ears, is there? The best way to avoid this is to protect your skin with gel or silicone. For the ears, you can buy specific protectors.

But if you still spill paint while you're painting, remember to wipe up the stain straight away with a piece of absorbent cotton dipped in warm water. If the paint has already stained your skin, apply a little coconut oil or vinegar.

5. Use the right amount

When you buy the dye, make sure you get enough for your hair. Or you could end up with half your hair in one color and half in another!

If you're just doing a root touch-up, one box may be enough. If you want to completely change your look, you'll usually have to use more than one box.

Those with short or sparse hair can use just one box. For medium and long hair, the quantity can vary from 2 to 4 boxes, depending on the volume of the hair.

6. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines

Each coloring kit may have different instructions. So put your laziness aside and read the manufacturer's instructions, paying particular attention to the product's pause time and how to mix and apply it to your hair.

Unfortunately, many mistakes when coloring hair at home happen because people simply don't read the instructions on the box.

7. Prepare the hair correctly

Before dyeing your hair at home, an important tip is to not wash your hair for at least 24 hours. This is because natural oils help protect the scalp during dyeing.

However, don't leave the hair too dirty, as this can also influence the result, preventing the color from being absorbed correctly or evenly.

However, this rule only applies to colorants, as toners work best on clean hair.

8. Part your hair and apply correctly

To avoid getting stained hair, parting it correctly is essential. Divide your hair into 4 parts with a parting from your forehead to the nape of your neck and another from ear to ear.

For long hair, one tip is to apply a little conditioner to the ends. As they are more porous, they tend to absorb more dye and become darker than the rest of the hair.

Apply the dye using a short-bristled brush and start at the nape of the neck, then the sides and finally the top of the head. Then distribute all the dye at the roots: first to the sides and then to the top of the head.

Leave the temples and the front for last. Unless you have gray hairs in these areas. In that case, start with them.

When it's about 15 minutes before it's time to remove the product, apply the rest of the dye to the lengths and ends. This prevents the hair from staining.

If you want to "blend" the roots so as not to make them look too artificial, use a damp towel and wipe the strands on the forehead, around the face and neck.

9. Follow the time indicated

It's very important to keep the dye for the time indicated by the manufacturer, no more, no less. Many people think that keeping the dye on longer will make the hair lighter or darker, but this is not true and can have a negative impact on the result.

Removing the dye prematurely can also be disastrous. Shades of brown, for example, can turn reddish and shades of blonde turn orange.

10. Moisturize

Finally, don't forget to moisturize after rinsing out the dye, using a more powerful mask in the days following the dye job. By the way, after dyeing your hair at home, don't use hot water to rinse or blow dry. The heat can encourage fading.

11. Use Yamá's Mini Fashion Color Kit

If you want an even more professional result, invest in excellent products such as Yamá's Mini Fashion Color Kit.
